The Nebraska Danger open their 2014 IFL home schedule this Saturday night against the Bemidji Axemen. The Axemen come to Grand Island off their 40-36 season opening win against Green Bay last Saturday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 PM at the Heartland Events Center and the game is presented by Seneca Companies.
The Danger opened the season with a 52-35 loss to defending United Bowl champion Sioux Falls last Friday night. They battled adversity most of the way, as reigning league MVP Jameel Sewell suffered an injury to the mid-section early the second quarter and did not return. Maurice Avery went 12-for-19 for 133 yards through the air in relief of Sewell.
"It was a tough way for us to start the season," Danger coach Mike Davis said. "But, we've got a long way to go and we just need to get better every week. Hopefully that starts this Saturday. We are excited to get going at home in front of our great fans."
Friday's game with Sioux Falls came down to defensive stops. The Storm held the Danger on downs twice and Nebraska kicker Joe Houston also missed a pair of field goals. Sioux Falls scored seven touchdowns and three field goals in ten possessions as neither team committed a turnover.
Bemidji opened their 2014 season - their first league game in franchise history - in style last Saturday as they defeated Green Bay 40-36 at home. Quarterback Hunter Wanket - who was in preseason camp with Nebraska last year - was 9-for-21 passing for 172 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Nearly as dominant was the Axemen defense which held Green Bay to minus-5 rushing yards on seven attempts.
"We expect a good battle with Bemidji," Davis said. "We know Coach (Robert) Fuller will have them prepared and they'll be disciplined on both sides of the ball. It should be a really good football game."
Despite the injury, Sewell, whose status for Saturday's game is still in doubt, led the Danger in rushing with 33 yards on five attempts against the Storm. Kayne Farquharson and Andre Piper-Jordan had 58 and 56 yards receiving to lead the Danger offense. Pig Brown led the Danger defense with seven tackles.
Kickoff is set for 7 pm on Saturday night at the Heartland Events Center. Doors open at 6:00 with pre-game activities beginning at 6:30.
Tickets for Saturday night are available at area Pump & Pantry stores, the Heartland Events Center Box Office, or via Ticketmaster. Theme for the night is Jersey Night. The game will be broadcast live on 2DayFM 103.1, or streamed live at www.2dayfm1031.com
Following the game, an autograph party with Players and Coaches will take place on the Danger turf.
